Eye Health A Priority in the Digital Age

Social distancing measures to counter Covid-19 have driven unmet demands for eye health support as consumers are pushed into more screen-bound lifestyles. Extensive screen time can lead to dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision and possibly retina damage from blue light emissions. Apart from adults, young children and teens are also spending long hours in the digital realm, exposing themselves to the risk of poor visual acuity later in life. While setting aside “screen-free” time may be the best option for reducing eye strain, it can often be the most difficult, especially as technology becomes more integrated into our lives.

Part of the preventative eye care measures is nutritional or dietary support for eye health. Eye health-friendly nutrients include zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin A and omega-3 fatty acids. Lutein and zeaxanthin are sometimes described as “internal sunglasses” as these concentrated pigments in the macula help protect the retina from blue light.
